What is DICOM?
DICOM is the world-wide accepted standard for medical image communication. The standard defines data structures and services for the vendor-independent exchange of medical images and related information. There are also definitions for waveforms, structured medical reports and other medical data / documents. Most imaging devices and many other systems in the healthcare domain implement one or more DICOM services. The standard text is freely available from the NEMA web site dicom.nema.org.
Who am I?

My name is Jörg Riesmeier and my first contact with DICOM was as a student of Computer Science in the mid 90s. Since then, I was concerned with many different topics of the standard. For example, my diploma thesis dealt with the processing and, in particular, the display of the very flexible but also complex DICOM image format. In the context of my doctoral thesis, I studied DICOM Structured Reporting (SR) and its visualization in detail. Furthermore, for many years now, I am one of the main developers of the Open Source DICOM toolkit DCMTK.
